'Tis the Season of Hope and Desire

Giorgio Armani was one of the first designers to realize celebrity sells, and he presciently outfitted Richard Gere in his suits in the 1980s movie, “American Gigolo.” This past week, Los Angeles designer Tiffany Saidnia garnered attention via reports that actress Brittany Murphy wore a short, black dress designed by her at what would be the actress’ last public appearance before her unexpected death Dec. 20 (at the age of 32). Murphy will be grieved by many, who enjoyed her movies, such as “Clueless” and “8 Mile.”

As the holidays gear up and the year winds down, we recall other greats who died this year, including performer Michael Jackson, actress Farrah Fawcett, and actor Patrick Swayze. Jackson was partial to designer Rick Pallack, while Fawcett’s red swimsuit in her famous 1976 poster was designed by Norma Kamali, and Hilary Rosenfeld designed Swayze’s costumes in 1987 film, “Dirty Dancing.”
Nowadays, some designers also branch out and create accessories, shoes, handbags and home furnishings. Check out our recent posts on Yuka, who makes hats for Britney Spears and Boy George, and jewelry and accessories designer Lara Kurtzman of Kelacala Q, whose pieces have been featured on TV shows, including “One Tree Hill."
While you’re at it, scan the post on the Retail Marketing Society, which hosted a monthly meeting Dec. 17 where Heather Pech, Nanette Lepore CEO, updated attendees on the state of New York’s Garment Center. And see the post for Dec. 12, when hundreds of women tried out for a spot on TV Land’s reality show, “She’s Got the Look.”
‘Tis the season when we examine our hopes, desires, wants and needs. Here at WeKnow.TV, we wish you a warm, fashion-filled holiday season. Best wishes!
