So I confess, I like the reality show “The Real Housewives of New York City.” But maybe it’s because I’m not a native New Yorker so I am curious to know more about Upper East Side socialites. I’m also into fashion, so I enjoy seeing the cast and their designer outfits, watching episodes that feature them shopping, and seeing how they style themselves and their families.
I have seen Countess LuAnn de Lesseps and interviewed Alex McCord at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York. I looked forward to seeing them and the rest of the cast March 4, during the show’s Season Three Premiere Party at La Pomme in Chelsea in New York. Hosted by Ms. de Lesseps, the party was crowded with “Housewives,” their fans, PR people, fashion designers, performers, and others looking fierce and fabulous. Chris Young , who is helping Ms. de Lesseps produce a dance single, was on hand. I talked with three of the original five Housewives: Ms. de Lesseps, Ramona Singer and Jill Zarin. I saw neither Alex McCord nor Bethenny Frankel. But I did see second-season “bad girl” Kelly Bensimon, who told me of all the Housewives, she’s the most “real.” Ms. Bensimon will be soon be showing another side of herself, as she will be featured in the March issue of Playboy .
In its third season, the New York Housewives will also star Sonja Morgan and Jennifer Gilbert, who both attended the premier party. Ms. Morgan described herself as the “crazy” one, and assured me she’d continue to be so this upcoming season.
Some critics have said the Bravo show is “out-of-date,” highlighting excess when the country is in the midst of an economic downturn. Yet there’s a tinge of realism, as even some of the well-to-do have tightened purse strings during the past year.
The second in a group of “Real Housewives” shows, which started with “The Real Housewives of Orange County” and now includes versions in Atlanta and New Jersey, to me, the New York show is the most interesting and the characters seem to be the least petty and small-minded. Sure, there supposedly was tension between Ms. Bensimon and Ms. Frankel last season, but conflict makes a reality show all the more interesting.
“The Real Housewives of New York” aired March 4 at 11 p.m. EST on Bravo. For more information, see the show’s Web site:
