The Art of a Private Moment

To say that Gregory Costanzo is a great portray photographer would be an understatement. Gregory has been shooting professionally in New York for the past 10 years but really his career started when he was 12 years old with his first 35mm camera and a dark room in his parent's basement in Virginia. While he is appreciative of the advancements in photography including the digital camera Gregory chooses to still shoot mostly with film in his cameras. He feels that it gives the pictures a unique quality that is missed by using digital cameras.

Since moving from Vail, Colorado where he was teaching snowboarding Gregory has traveled to places like Argentina and South Africa capturing those great, unscripted moments that happen between takes on T.V shows and commercial sets. Gregory also has contracts with several of the most prominent theaters in the city. But maybe most impressive, and the reason we were at the Chain and Maiden Gallery, is his work behind the scenes on the hit T.V series Desperate Housewives.

The collection of about 15 photographs all center around Eva Longoria Parker's character, Gabbie and her family. Shot all in black in white they seem to have timeless quality to them. Shot in panoramic view it allows you to see more of what is going around the actors and makes you feel almost like you're on set with them. The general consensus from those in attendance was that it was great to see those private, intimate moments that only come from being truly comfortable and at ease with yourself and the people around you.

My favorite photograph was one of Eva Longoria Parker and Ricardo Antonio Chavira sitting on a couch on set between takes and Ricardo is kissing Eva's head. It's such a sweet, comfortable moment that would be hard to catch through the lens of a video camera. Another stand out was the large print of Eva looking over her shoulder into the back seat of the vehicle she was in that was hung by itself on one wall of the gallery.

When asked what drew them to putting this collection of work on display the owner of Chain and Maiden Gallery, , said that it was really more about Gregory's entire body of work, more so then just these particular photos that attracted them. They are hoping that since the show is something that most people have seen and thanks to the general public fascination with celebrity life that Gregory will get the recognition that his work deserves.

So what's next for this talented photographer? If you ask him though he'll say that he's going just keep doing what he's been doing, continue to take great portraits of actors and people and hope that the success of this show will parlay itself into more T.V shows and bigger projects. Word is that Nurse Jackie is on his bucket list. After the great turn out this event had I'm sure exciting things are just around the corner, and possibly into the hospital. Click Here to View more photos of this event: http://s668.photobucket.com/albums/vv41/francoisvision/Desperate%20Housewives%20by%20Greg/
