EFA Open Studios Showcases 71 Artists Oct. 14-16

Your chance to see 71 artists under one roof in New York is this Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 14-16, during The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts Open Studios 2010. Held at the artists’ habitat on 323 West 39th Street between 8th and 9th avenues, the event will showcase the artists and their work (in a wide range of media). I went to the press preview last month and ended up spending my time in two galleries. Why? Because I liked both the art and the artists’ stories behind how and why they created their pieces. The photos shown above don’t do the art justice. These pieces need to be seen both in person and in the actual size.

Marianne Barcellona: This artist’s portraits remind me of Chinese artist Zhang Xiaogang’s individual and family portraits. In both Barcellona’s and Zhang’s work the subjects appear to be both human and inhuman. In Barcellona’s case, her portraits are of inanimate subjects: small wooden figures on exhibit at the Cairo Museum in Egypt.

Morgan O’Hara: Any kid can take a pencil or crayon and scribble on a sheet of paper. Morton doesn’t scribble. She follows the movement of a maestro’s arms as he directs an orchestra (shown above), or the patterns of a woman’s paths as she makes her way daily from her home to the marketplace.
