I attended two fund-raisers in New York March 11: a Beauty Ball for the March of Dimes (see earlier blog post) and The 9th Annual Minds Matter Soiree, which featured a fashion show by design label Sachika, and was held at the M2 Ultralounge, a massive, football field sized venue on West 28th Street.
The Minds Matter event was not your typical fashion show with onlookers seated on either side of a catwalk. Models in the Sachika show walked a cross-shaped runway set amidst the hip, semi-formally dressed crowd. The women models looked feminine and beautiful in Sachika's form-fitting, figure flattering, knit jersey and silky dresses (from the fall 2010 collection), while the men appeared fit and buff in the label’s new line of white T-shirts.
Before the show, Sachika designing duo, identical twins To-Tam and Ton-Nya Ton-Nu, posed for photos with celebrity designers and models. Proceeds from the soiree will benefit Minds Matter, which supports high achieving kids from low-income families. Diana Hyde, New York chapter Minds Matter executive director, looked glamorous herself in a gold sequined, backless, fitted, knee-length dress by designer Naeem Khan.
The Sachika designers and Minds Matter reps said fashion goes hand-in-hand with fund-raising. Runway shows provide entertainment for nonprofit events, plus the nonprofit events help designers introduce their lines to new patrons.
