Wooden shelves full of dreams seems a bit farfetched, but not for Austrian artist Lies Maculan. For her latest exhibition in New York, she photographed 100 images and objects placed on wooden shelves. The objects represented dreams, desires and wishes. (For example, a photo of dollar bills clipped to a clothesline represented dreams of riches). Maculan then enlarged the photos to lifesize and laminated them to wooden boards, and then hinged the boards together to form giant wooden screens (which looked like actual bookshelves from far away).
"The Dream Shop," Maculan's pop-up art, photo realistic installation represents our subconscious psyche. Each object is a symbolic expression that is whimsical and conveys a surrealistic experience. Faith, everlasting love, epiphany, Stepford Wives, the perfect husband, revenge and weight control are just some of the dreams, desires, and wishes represented in the exhibit.
Opening night featured Solerno Liqueur cocktails and the most delicious Austrian chocolates. Among the guest were Countess LuAnn de Lesseps, Erin Fetherston, Reni Lane, Sam Bassett, Dr. Marc Wallack, Jamie Colby, Adriana Randall, Beata Bohman, Carol Han, Kristian Laliberte, Chessy Wilson, Mo Choi, Ellen Von Unwerth and Robert Fowler. Overall, I thought the exhibit was remarkable. I highly recommend it. "The Dream Shop" is on view by appointment now through March 30. For more information, visit
