Retail Marketing Society Tracks Shopping Trends

I saw many people window-shopping, but few buying and carrying shopping bags on the last Friday evening before Christmas in midtown Manhattan. Even so, retailers are hoping for big holiday sales to boost their end-of-year, fourth quarter results.

But one organization in New York keeps tabs on the market year-round. The Retail Marketing Society monitors apparel, accessories, cosmetics, supermarkets, electronics and real estate markets. Its members network and exchange ideas at monthly speaker’s meetings (from September to June). On Dec. 17, Heather Pech, Nanette Lepore CEO, presented on New York’s garment industry. Other past topics included finance, marketing, advertising and store design.

"Save the Garment Center" has been reaching out to other organizations in the apparel industry to increase awareness about the importance of this movement. On their behalf, Pech, who is also the president of Nanette Lepore, spoke to members of the Retail Marketing Society about the challenges that need to be overcome. Her presentation included clips from "Schmatta: Rags to Riches to Rags," an HBO documentary that brings to life the vibrant history of the Garment District.

Anne Marie Soto, the Retail Marketing Society executive director, said guests are welcome to attend the monthly meetings. For more information, see the organization’s Web site. The group’s commitment is to provide a forum for discussion of timely trends and issues in retailing. This weekend, it’s time to go shopping! Happy Holidays!
