BK Fashion Week(end) Among Others in Brooklyn

Fashion “weeks” in some cities are hard to define. For example, New York’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (MBFW) runs for eight days in a row each spring and fall. But there are other fashion events in New York before, during and after the MBFW shows. Brooklyn also has various fashion "weeks" with different sponsors and names. Coming up April 11 is the BK Fashion Week(end), which will feature fall/winter 2010 collections by Crying Tears, Alisha Trimble, Das Komitee, DJAMEE, Gwen Beloti, Terri Stevens, and W.H. Maxwell High School.

Last February, WeKnow.TV covered the Williamsburg Fashion Weekend, which included Tar and Feather. Tar and Feather also was among design labels in the Brooklyn Fashion Festival last September, 2009. Its designers Corine Zach and Jessica Dorfman make easy, utilitarian, casual, funky separates. I labeled last September’s Tar and Feather collection as: “Madonna’s Material Girl meets Walt Disney’s Elmer Fudd,” while its more recent collection of disheveled clothing (shown above) could be described as a “hangover.”

Also showing last September at the Brooklyn Fashion Festival were Linney Warren, Maira Santos Houck, and Kelly Dempsey (of Kelly Fashion). Unlike MBFW, which is mainly exclusive to press and fashion industry insiders, the various Brooklyn fashion events can be attended by anyone who buys a ticket. That's what Tom McAlister said he had in mind when co-producing the Brooklyn Fashion Festival last fall. “Fashion is for everybody,” McAlister explained.
