On Tuesday May 4th Fashion Institute of Technology’s Fashion Culture Special Programs invited sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy to speak with Valerie Steel about their careers as fashion designers, and the creation of their brand label tagged Rodarte.
After graduating from Berkley collage in Pasadena, California both with liberal arts degree, the sisters began to put together a ten piece collection of romantic dresses. With great will and tenacity, the sisters flew to New York City and showed the collection to major fashion editors and upscale retailers. Now since its inception, the sisters have won countless awards such as the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the year award in 2009, the Swarovski Award for Womenswear in 2008, and the Eco Domani Fashion Foundation Award in 2006. Rodarte has been worn by many celebrities like, Cate Blanchett, Keira Knightley, Tilda Swinton, and Emma Watson. With no former training in fashion; the sisters used their vision, imagination and creativity to create clothing that seems other worldly. They use techniques such as aging, burning, shredding, and sandpaper to distress and destroyed all kinks of materials used in every piece of clothing. Yet each piece emits an ethereal beauty. Their advice to all aspiring designers is always have a vision, and never lose sight of it. The sisters are unbelievably down-to-earth and still live and work in California.
