Vogue’s Andre Leon Talley (ALT) at FIT

Andre Leon Talley is larger than life and that’s what this blog post would be if I included everything he said at his talk at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York May 6. As part of The Museum at FIT Fashion Conversation series, director and chief curator Valerie Steele talked with Talley for about an hour about his life and career, including his present work as a contributing editor and columnist for Vogue magazine. Afterwards, Talley spent about an hour answering questions from the full-house audience, beguiling all with his anecdotes about Karl Lagerfeld, Diana Vreeland, Anna Wintour and more. If you missed the talk, your best bet is to read Talley’s autobiography: “A.L.T.: A Memoir.”

Here are other links to topics and people Talley mentioned:

Designer LaQuan Smith of Queens (mentioned in Talley’s “Life with Andre” column in the April issue of Vogue). This young man is one to watch. He takes a modern spin on traditional shapes, such as sheath dresses, using unexpected fabrics and details. I saw one of his dresses and wanted to see more.

Hat designer Rae Rae, who doesn’t have a Web site but does sell her hats at the Museum Shop at the Museum of the City of New York and has made hats for Talley.
